The Fight For Freedom To Share The Gospel

The struggle our founding fathers in the United States is the same as our struggle today. We are in a battle to gain and maintain freedom. As they fought for freedom from England’s tyranny, we are fighting for freedom from the tyranny of liberal, leftist Marxists. As they fought for liberty to live free dictated by their own consciences and God, we are fighting to live free dictated by our own consciences and God.

This fight for liberty is not unique to the population in the United States. This plight of lost freedom and fight for freedom has been going on since the time of Adam and Eve. This plight and fight are a part of human history and experience.

The fight for freedom in this world is a fight for the freedom to publish and share the Gospel. In a world ruled by Satan, every attempt will be made to deny that freedom. Censorship and penalties will be practiced to silence the message of liberty in Christ.

Jesus Christ Is True Freedom

Jesus announced a remarkable fulfillment of prophecy. In Luke 4:15–21, as He stood in the synagogue at Nazareth, He read from the book of Isaiah, proclaiming His calling and purpose. This passage says, “And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.” Jesus announced that He was the fulfilment of the Messianic prophecy. He was and is the Messiah.

Verses 17–19 continue, “And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”

This Old Testament prophecy was written seven hundred years before Jesus read it. Isaiah 61:1-2 says, “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.”

Isaiah prophesied Jerusalem’s conquest by the Babylonians. They would suffer exile and bondage. But, in the prophesy, God’s servant announces He will deliver Israel from bondage at the appointed time. Jesus was that Servant, and announced He was their liberator.

Luke 4:20–21 says, “And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” Jesus was the Messiah sent to heal, preach, liberate, comfort, and affirm God’s promise for vengeance against evil and injustice.

The Fight For Freedom Is A Spiritual Fight

Ultimately, the plight and the fight for freedom are spiritual. The sorrows, sufferings, and bondage referred to in the prophecy of Isaiah and all the prophets in the Scriptures are due to living in a world of sin and Satan. When people hurt and enslave others, they are mimicking the actions and fulfilling the purpose of Satan. This is true on a personal level, an international level, and everything in between.

The American founders referred to God in the Declaration of Independence as the beginning and the reason for freedom. They wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

They were not in an act of rebellion against England. They were in an act of defense, fighting for their rights to be free as God’s citizens. Their complaint was that as English citizens, England’s king and government rejected them and denied their freedoms and rights as English citizens. After enduring many injustices English citizens were protected from and many attempts to civilly request fair and equal treatment as English citizens, they argued that having been treated as noncitizens, they would act as noncitizens of England and declare themselves a new nation under heaven. They declared themselves to be new citizens of a new nation.

They appealed to God as their king because the king of England had denied and revoked their rights and privileges as English citizens, and they needed to appeal to a higher authority to justify their rights and their fight for freedom. Having been rejected by the king of England, they declared allegiance to another king. John Adams summed up their sentiment, saying, “We recognize no sovereign but God, and no king but Jesus!”

In doing so, they were acknowledging the spiritual roots of freedom. Freedom and enslavement in the human population are manifestations of spiritual struggle. For this reason, our Create or, Jesus Christ, said in John 8:32, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Knowing Jesus is the way to experience freedom because He is truth. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Believing in Jesus is the only way to experience true and complete freedom.

Though humanity may fight for freedom in this world of evil and oppression, true freedom requires Jesus Christ. The freedom Jesus offers is a complete package. He alone frees us from spiritual bondage and eternal condemnation, and He frees us from hopelessness with the promise of eternal life in His kingdom.

There is no ability in us to fight for gaining this complete freedom. The opportunity for freedom is because of God, and all glory belongs to Him when freedom of any kind is experienced.

The Gospel Message Is About Freedom

Is freedom worth fighting for? Yes, it is. It is with freedom we can share God’s promise in the Gospel message for true freedom. Satan’s agenda is to remove our freedom to proclaim the message of freedom. Political attempts to govern people with censorship and tyranny are not merely human politics and power struggles. We are witnessing spiritual warfare manifesting itself in human events today. We are witnessing the inevitable progression toward lost freedom to proclaim Christ without persecution. Eventually, we will be forced to proclaim Christ under threat of punishment and death like many other Christians already do in other countries.

The Lord commissioned His church to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, and those who understand human events in the context of spiritual warfare understand how important it is to be relevant and practical with our Christianity in every area of our lives and do all things to the glory of God.

The political battles between groups of people are about the freedom to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In a world of sin and Satan, every attempt is being made to distort and censor the promise of God and the Word of God. It is not possible or wise to separate secular events from spiritual events. Under Satan, everything is connected and intertwined. If we fail to see this connection, we fail to recognize the Biblical perspective of real-world events around us, and we fail to understand our times. Let’s celebrate freedom in Jesus and tell others they too can be free in king Jesus.
